First Place - Matthew Hodge Second Place - Roger Guo Honorable Mention - Kasra Tavakoli
A note from Becky Chaffee, MusicTeacherGifts.com Owner and Creator: All these students are very talented. They have different amounts of experience and instruction. No one should be discouraged if they don’t “place”. This competition is meant to encourage the students. Many tell me, they enjoy seeing each others work for inspiration. (Most of the student entries are presented below, or on the pages noted for their age group - scroll down).
I am proud that both experienced young composers and composers with little or no instruction are comfortable entering this competition. I think the most important part of this is the judges’ feedback to fuel future work for each student. In addition, it is great for the students to see what others are creating. The judges and I also love to hear the student work.
This competition was created by myself, Becky, through my music gift shop, MusicTeacherGifts.com. I create everything sold on this website, and hope that you will purchase gifts here for your teachers and friends to help support this project. My time is volunteer work. There are many, many unseen hours that I pour into this competition in addition to finding the wonderful volunteer judges, and donating the prize money with the help of Performers Music of Chicago and SheetMusicPlus.com. Please look up the work of the amazing judges here, and give our sponsors your business. Thank you.
For this special 10th year of my competition, I asked many people for more donations to have bigger and more prizes. A special thank you to donors GUBMK Constructors (in honor of my late husband, Duane Chaffee); Pam Robertson, Composer and Pianist; Fay Adams, Piano Teacher Extraordinaire, UTK Piano Professor Emeritis; and Jiaqi Liu, Past 1st Place winner and Composition Student at The Juilliard School. We now have a small savings to start the competition next year!

Thank you, thank you, Mrs. Chaffee! You should win all the children's book awards the world has to offer for creating such a fresh concept of a book!”

Ms. Kimbro wrote me a letter to say reading through the book with the class, they had conversations that they never even thought about having.

This book gives suggestions for practicing that are presented with humor for children in a coffee table quality book. The great Itzhak Perlman signs his autograph with "Practice Slowly". Many kids just want to play thru a piece as fast as possible. When you slow it way down and get the notes and counting correct, then it's easy and fun to speed the music up a little bit at a time with a metronome.
This book presents the ideas with engaging humorous pictures. It will inspire musicians of any age to practice their instrument for fun. Thoughtful questions posed make the book interactive. Two pages of stickers are included.
Becky Chaffee has a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Cornell University. She is an amateur musician, and has listened to about 20 years of music lessons taking her kids to violin and piano classical and jazz, and herself to flute lessons.

“Ms. Chaffee’s creative book reminds people who grew up learning music that they can successfully pick up their instrument again. Whether playing by yourself or in a group, you have to practice to be proficient enough to enjoy playing. If you practice smarter, you will set yourself up for a fun challenge and have a rewarding experience. This book offers ideas for improving your practice sessions. Amazing practice tips and stories from very accomplished musicians included in the book will remind you of others out there practicing too and give you an understanding of what some of them went through to get to their playing level.”
